So... Games Workshop has now confirmed that they have a new department to deal with and re-release their old Specialist Games - it was confirmed on the Warhammer Visions app.
That's good news.
Here's where it stops being a good thing though: They can never live up to expectations here.
If they re-release the old systems as they were, people will complain that they haven't changed anything, haven't addressed old problems and so on.
If they do update and change things, people will decide that they prefer the old version, or that the new version doesn't live up to how they remember the older version.
It happened with both the Blood Bowl and the Epic 40k re-releases their old team tried.
No matter how good those new models they release are, they won't live up to the rose-tinted glasses.
And then there's Gorkamorka. With the possible exception of Man o' War, it is the least talked about Specialist Game out there... A kind of red-headed step-child that Games Workshop tried to hide ashamedly 15 years ago.
I doubt they'll bother with this one. At least not until everything else is done.
It was a game that relied a lot on originality, custom conversion work, and stuff like that - Games Workshop of yesteryear even suggested harvesting toy cars for the game.
Games Workshop of today would never go for that.
They'd either restrict the open feel of it, or find some other way to fuck up the system.
In a way, it'd be kinder for it to stay forgotten, so those of us that still care can continue to maintain it ourselves.
Now, don't get me wrong - I'd fucking love up-to-date, new, plastic models for Muties, Rebel Grots and Diggas.
I'd love it if they did that.
But I don't think they'd keep what Gorkamorka was in the game... Not that it wouldn't be easy.
Clamshell packs, clamshell packs everywhere. Armour gubbinz pack, ammo pack, rokkit pack, wheels pack, spiky bits pack, glyph plate pack, and so on. It's near endless.
Cybork parts packs for injuries.
There's so much that they alone can do to make this game work...
But as I say, I doubt they'll even touch this one. Too much Nostalgia for Blood Bowl, Gothic and Epic - there's a limit to what they can produce, after all, and that'll be dealt in priority order for the games that people remember.
Fuck, even Man o' War, which I think is the most forgotten Specialist Game had a revival of sorts with Dreadfleet recently, what did Gorkamorka get?
A reference in a previous Necron codex saying that the Ultramarine First Company found Angelis to be populated only by Necrons. And that Calgar wiped the Tin'eads off the face of the planet.
With that in mind, Man o' War is probably above Gorkamorka in terms of properties to squeeze for a fresh dime.
Games Workshop, you've entered into the Kobayashi Maru now... People are going to complain no matter what you do.
Don't fuck up Gorkamorka.
Don't.
Fuck.
Up.
Gorkamorka.
